Ask about the choices. Then listen.
What we want an artist interview to reveal beyond the standard release announcement.

Begin with close listening
A good question often begins with a specific detail: a change in a song’s arrangement, an unusual vocal decision, or a line that shifts the mood. Close listening gives an artist something real to respond to.
Make room for uncertainty
Creative decisions are not always part of a neat plan. Ask what changed, what did not work, and what surprised the artist. Those answers can reveal more than a rehearsed account of inspiration.
Respect the boundaries
An artist can discuss a personal song without sharing every private event behind it. Questions should make room for that distinction. The work itself offers plenty to explore: craft, collaboration, performance, and intention.
Our interview approach
This is an editorial note on how Independent intends to conduct interviews, not a conversation with a named artist. Published interviews should be based on actual exchanges, with clear attribution and careful handling of quotes.
